Summary of visit

The final year mechanical student of 7 BTME-B , visited NAL, Bengaluru on  26th August, 2019. It was an informative and a memorable visit. We visited the advanced composite division, the Autoclave Mark I,II,III and IV and the wind tunnel complex , each of which is explained in this report . Mr. Somanarayan, In-charge Visits, KTMD CSIR-NAL, Bangalore took us around the campus and informed to us about how each division works.

The following divisions were visited in the CSIR-NAL, Bangalore

  1. ADVANCED COMPOSITE  DIVISION: This division of National Aerospace Laboratories (CSIR-NAL) is a Centre of Excellence for Composite Structures in India. With its co-cured and co-bonded technologies, ACD has made significant contributions to the Light Combat Aircraft project (LCA-TEJAS). The division with a judicious mix of basic research & applied R&D has managed to stay at the forefront of technology.
  2. AUTOCLAVES:  This is used for the manufacture of superior quality structural components containing high fibre volume fraction and low void content. The autoclave is a pressure vessel which provides the curing conditions for the composite where the application of vacuum, pressure, heat up rate and cure temperature are controlled. High processing pressures allow the moulding of thicker sections of complex shapes.
  3. NATIONAL TRISONIC AERODYNAMIC FACILITIES DEPARTMENT: This division of CSIR-NAL has been serving the country as a nucleus of research and development in high speed aerodynamics since the last five decades. Every Indian aerospace vehicle has graduated out of CSIR-NAL’s 1.2m x 1.2m trisonic wind tunnel.
  4. RUSTOM B DAMANIA HANGAR: This is located in NAL premises. It houses the HANSA-NG , MESCO and CNM5 flights. The New Generation Hansa (HANSA-NG) features state-of-the-art Glass cockpit, Rotax-912iSc sport engine and steerable nose wheel.
